Evangeline donned a dress that belonged to her great-great-great-grandfather John Ellis Coulter. He was a businessman in Connelly Springs, NC, who was a pious layman, teaching Sunday school at the church. So, here she is, wearing his dress.
The Coulter's must have been well-heeled. That is a very fancy outfit. And to think it fits Evangeline so perfectly! So, you google genius's, Grandpop and I are wondering when male children quit wearing dresses(except for baptism). There are pictures of Uncle Walt, and even Uncle Bill in dresses as toddlers. That was in the early 1900's. hm-m-m-m And we never get tired of watching little kids in big shoes! :) Love, Grandma
I am going to guess that boys began wearing pants at about the same time that education became compulsory. So.... 1890's? The idea was to socialize children at a younger age, so boys began dressing more like their elder counterparts. (Probably in opposition to their Victorian Parents' upbringing.) Also, it occurs to me that WWI may have been an influence, with so many of the young men coming back who were used to wearing pants, and began dressing their sons similarly. Dunno.
Mr. Coulter was what we in the business would call "short of stature." (And that Miss Kitty is a crack-up. Oh, and good job with those shoes, E!)
